Blit splits restaurant bills. This page explains what we collect when you use this website or the Blit app (on your phone or in the browser at useblit.app), why, who helps us run it, and the choices you have. It describes only what Blit actually does.
Who we are
Blit is made by AVELON STUDIO S.R.L., a company registered in Romania. We are responsible for your data (the data controller). For any privacy question or request, email admin@useblit.com.
This website and the waitlist
This website sets no cookies and has no ads, analytics or tracking. Its fonts, images and video come from our own site.
If you join the early access list, your browser sends your email address to our database, where we keep it with the time you joined. We use it only to tell you when Blit is out. We do this with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time: email us and we'll delete your address.
The Blit app
Your account
You can use Blit with an account or as a guest.
- With an account, we keep your email address and your name. You sign in with an email and password, with a link or code we email you, or with Google or Apple. Google and Apple share your name and email address with us; Google also shares your profile picture, which Blit doesn't use.
- As a guest, you give only a name. Guests join rooms, claim items and mark payments like anyone else, and can keep their rooms later by signing in or creating an account.
People in your rooms see your name, but not your email address. If you sign in with an email code without giving a name, your name starts as the part of your address before the @, and you can change it in the app at any time. A few people at Blit can see account details, such as your name, email address and how many rooms you're in, to run the service and handle misuse, and we keep a record of any change they make to an account.
Rooms and bills
When you host or join a room, we store what's needed to split the bill: the room's name and code, the items with their prices and quantities, service, tax and any discount, who is in the room, who claimed what, how the charges are split, and the result of any game played for a charge.
When the host settles a room, we store each person's share and its payment marks: whether you marked it paid, how (cash, bank transfer, Revolut or another way), and whether the host confirmed it. Blit never handles the money itself.
Everyone in a room sees its items, who claimed what and each person's share. Payment marks are seen only by the person who owes and the host.
If the host links a room to a partner restaurant, settling it adds a visit to that restaurant's stamp card for each person in the room. The restaurant's staff can see the visits and rewards on its card, but not your name or email address.
Reading receipts
When a host scans a receipt, Blit can read it online. The app asks before it sends your first photo, and you can stop it any time under Receipt reading in your account. Without it, you add the items by hand. Reading needs an account; guests can't scan.
The photos go through our server to Anthropic, whose AI model, Claude, reads them and sends back the items and amounts. Anthropic does this for us as our service provider. Blit doesn't store or log the photos. The items you keep become the room's items.
For each read we keep a short record: who asked, when, which model read it, how much work that took (counted in tokens) and whether it worked. We use it for the daily reading limit and to keep track of our costs.
On your device
The app keeps you signed in by storing your session on your phone, or in your browser's storage for the web app, along with a few settings, such as whether you allowed receipt reading. Blit has no ads, analytics or tracking, in the app or on this website.
Why we use your data
- To give you the service you asked for: your account, rooms, receipt reading and payment marks. This is our contract with you.
- To keep Blit safe and affordable: the reading limit, cost records and suspending accounts that misuse Blit. These are our legitimate interests.
- To tell you when Blit launches, if you joined the waitlist. This is your consent.
Who helps us run Blit
We use a few service providers, who handle data only to run Blit for us:
- Supabase, for our database, sign-in and server functions. Blit's data is stored in the EU, in AWS's Frankfurt region (eu-central-1).
- Anthropic, to read the receipt photos you choose to scan.
- Cloudflare, which hosts this website and the web app at useblit.app.
- Google and Apple, if you sign in with them. The web app also downloads its graphics engine, and fonts for some characters, from Google's servers (gstatic.com), which see your IP address when it does.
Some of these providers may process data outside the EU, including in the United States.
We don't sell your data, share it for advertising or show ads.
How long we keep it
- Your account and rooms: for as long as your account exists. To close your account, email us. Closing it removes your name and email address from your profile and from settled bills, and you can no longer sign in. Rooms stay as part of the other people's bills, with you shown as Deleted user, and the records of your receipt reads stay with the closed account.
- The waitlist: until Blit launches and we've told you, or until you ask us to delete your address.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct or delete it, to limit or object to how we use it, or to receive it in a form you can take elsewhere. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time. Email admin@useblit.com and we'll reply within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to Romania's data protection authority, ANSPDCP (dataprotection.ro), or to the authority where you live.
Children
Blit isn't meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has given us data, email us and we'll delete it.
Changes to this policy
When Blit changes what it does with data, we'll update this page and the date at the top. If a change affects you, we'll tell you before it takes effect.
